Its stupid how they change the name of something to suit a different country..

A perfect example is an Aussie film called The Castle...they had to re-dub certain words so the Americans would understand what we Aussies were talking about..for example..rissoles was changed into meatballs..

Is it too challenging for Americans to learn other cultures linguistic turn of phrases?

That just doesn't make any sense. The Philosopher's Stone is an ancient and mystical symbol. Or have Americans always called that the Sorceror's Stone?

Although every country does it. "Sweating Bullets" was called "Tropical Heat" in Europe for some reason. Germans especially simplify titles. Not realizing titles are an essential part. You don't get to change it just because you don't like it, do you? It doesn't work like that, dammit!

It usually has to do with copyrighted titles. That's why Peter Jackson's BRAIN DEAD movie was retitled to DEAD ALIVE for a US release. There is an 80's horror movie already called Brain Dead in the IMDb, so Peter had to retitle his movie to something that hadn't been used already. Also why DAWN OF THE DEAD, released in Europe as ZOMBI, forced Fulci (who was then in the process producing a movie titled ZOMBI) to retitle his movie ZOMBI 2, although it had nothing to do with Romero's movie.

Weird, since I still come across movies that carry the same title. And that aren't remakes.

Maybe they're released under different title in the US. I often see (US title) in italic mentioned at the IMDb.

Must work the other way around then too. US titles that already existed in Europe or Australia that are re-named for that reason?

I understand why they translated the movie title Lola Rennt to Run Lola, Run. (Usually I dislike German, but I liked this one.) I mentioned the title before to someone, who thought it was more like Lola's Rent, which kinda sounds like a porn-moie.
